On 22 June 2009 the laden bulk carrier Kiran (175,048 DWT)
en route from Saldanha Bay to China
experienced main engine failure off the coast off Cape Town
and was in danger of running aground.
Excessive weather conditions
Our Emergency Towing Vessel (ETV) Smit Amandla was immediately dispatched
to render assistance under a Lloyds Open Form (LOF) contract.
A helicopter landed a salvage team onboard the disabled bulk carrier to connect up.
Smit Amandla connected up to the Kiran was able to slowly commence towage offshore
- even though the weather conditions were excessive with a force 8-9 nwly and an
increasing swell of over 5 meters at times.
When the tug connected up,
the ’Kiran’ was less than 5 miles from Slangkop/Scarborough.
On 27 June the bulk carrier was safely towed to False Bay
where her main engine was repaired.
Subsequently she was able to continue her voyage.
