In the early hours of Saturday 25 April,
month-old combined chemical/product tanker Costanze M
experienced serious damage to her main engine.
Without propulsion the vessel was drifting 20NM off the
coast off Istanbul, Turkey where local water depths do not allow the vessel to anchor.
Through its extensive network, SMIT Salvage immediately dispatched tug ‘Wizard’
to rendezvous with the casualty; the same day a tow connection was established.
SMIT Salvage was awarded a Lloyds Open Form contract to render assistance to the unfortunate vessel.
Furthermore ocean-going salvage tug ‘Matsas Star’
was dispatched from her home port in Lavrion, Greece on Saturday evening.
A salvage team of 6 was mobilised to Istanbul where they embarked the tug
on Monday. Tuesday morning ‘Matsas Star’ took over the casualty from ‘Wizard’.
Safely redelivered after a 4 day tow
After a 4 day voyage under tow of ‘Matsas Star’ -
which took the convoy through the Bosporus and the Dardanelles –
the vessel was safely redelivered to her owners in Aliaga, Turkey on Saturday 2 May.
