SEABULK TRADER; Material Failure (Vessels) On: 12/31/2008 MISLE Activity Number: 3398377 Originating Unit: Marine Safety Unit Lake Charles MISLE Activity Owner: Commandant (CG-5453) MISLE Activity Controller: Commandant (CG-5453) MISLE Case Number: I. INCIDENT BRIEF While underway, outbound in the Calcasieu River below beacon 96, with pilot onboard and two tugboat alongside, the vessel experienced a momentary loss of propulsion due to a lube oil pump trip. The pump trip occurred as a result of a failed temperature regulator, which caused a low lube oil temperature, leading to a high current draw and an over-current trip. The back up lube oil pump started immediately and the engine was restarted on bridge control. The vessel maintained headway and steering and remained safely within the channel at all times. The temperature regulator was repaired and the lube oil pump was tested. All equipment is in good order 7816549,49568,29763,Tc,US,AB

Not obvious how false low LO temperature creates high current draw on pump. System should be able to handle loss of 1 LO pump without shutting down main engine.
