MISLE Activity Number: 3386484 Originating Unit: Sector San Francisco MISLE Activity Owner: Commandant (CG-5453) MISLE Activity Controller: Commandant (CG-5453) MISLE Case Number: I. INCIDENT BRIEF On December 11, 2008, the Tug MARSHALL FOSS was called out to assist the T/V CYGNUS VOYAGER. The CYGNUS VOYAGER had lost propusion approximately 20 miles offshore of San Francisco. The MARSHALL FOSS arrived on scene and put the CYGNUS VOYAGER in tow while the tanker made repairs. Once the repairs were complete, the MARSHALL FOSS and the CYGNUS VOYAGER attempted to remove the tow line from the tanker. Upon removing the line, the tug took a large wave which caused the tow line to swing off the vessel and under the tug. The line got sucked into the portside Z Drive of the MARSHALL FOSS. The MARSHALL FOSS was able to return to port on the starboard engine. Repairs were completed to the port side drive.
