Portsmouth, UK, Aug 8 -- Liquid Natural Gas Carrier Methania (81792 gt, built 1978) was struck by lightning at 0720, today. As a result, the venting pipe of one of the four cargo tanks that allows gas to escape to the atmosphere caught fire. The URS tug Brugge was on standby position, however the fire was swiftly put off by the crew on the vessel, who suppressed it with nitrogen. As a result of the incident, gas has been leaking from an unknown area of the vessel. Methania sailed from Zeebrugge at 1300, today, towards the open sea, for safety reasons. Once the problem is solved the vessel would be returning to berth no. 615 at Zeebrugge to take on the rest of its cargo. --

Repairs to Distrigas's LNG carrier Methania are underway after the cause of a leak from the ship's primary barrier was identified. Peter Raes of Exmar says a part from a malfunctioning pump pierced the primary barrier in the vessels No 4 cargo tank. He says the ship's secondary barrier did its job in containing the escaping product.

This may well be two separate casualties. Lots of questions here.
