PETROKREPOST (Liberia, 59731gt) with 484,000 barrels of fuel oil on board,
was taking on water due shaft coupling breakage, 26-Oct-2006,
as reported to New Orleans Coast Guard who restricted vessel from sailing.
On 26OCT06, at approx 1220, Liberian tankship PETROKREPOST
experienced a loss of propulsion and began taking on water in the
engine room while attempting to moor at Valero Refinery IVO MM 125 LMR.
The vessel was carrying approx 484k barrels of fuel
oil for discharge at the time of the incident.
The cause of the casualty was a broken shaft coupling
due to severely wasted flange bolts,
which sheared and caused the tail shaft
to separate from the intermediate shaft and shift aft approx 14
inches, allowing ingress of water into the engine room.
No injuries or pollution resulted.
