DELICATE operations yesterday afternoon resulted in the successful refloating of the Liberian-flagged tanker Sperchios off the south coast of Puerto Rico. The 61,540 dwt ship is owned and operated by Pleiades Shipping Agents of Greece. The US Coast Guard told Fairplay the vessel was floated from its sandy perch in Guayanilla Bay at about 1350 following a complicated protocol that included lightering the 33,600 tonnes of crude from the vessel's tanks and replacing the weight by pumping seawater into its ballast tanks to ensure stability as the tide rose. At high water, the ballast tanks were emptied and the lightened ship floated free and was able to move under its own power, USCG spokesman Ricardo Castrodad reported. During the salvage, the ship was surrounded by tugs and a specialised oil spill recovery vessel from National Response Corp in St Croix, and overflown by a US Coast Guard helicopter that supervised the operation. No spills or pollution were reported during the incident and the ship is undergoing a hull survey before being allowed to depart. The grounding happened at 0730 on Tuesday morning (22 November).
