Norwegian-flagged M/T Fjord Champion, Liverpool, England, to Rostock, Germany with 28 crew, in ballast with 746 tons of heavy oil and 83 tons of diesel fuel for its own use. Suffered engine room fire off Oslo, Norway. Crew evacuated to nearby city Kristiansand. tanker drifted aimlessly toward Norwegian shore ran aground few kilometers off S.coast, still burning, and fire is not very easy to reach.

Fire which destroyed the engine room and superstructure, extinguished late March 6 -- next step is to empty 825 tons of oil from vessel's fuel tanks.

Local authorities continue to fend off criticism that they were woefully unprepared to deal with the stricken tanker. Vessel now towed to shore.

FJORD CHAMPION (Norway, 17966gt) Liverpool for Rostock in ballast, caught fire in the engine room 5-Mar-2005 about 15 miles off Mandal, Norway. All 28 crewmembers were evacuated to Kristiansand. A tug took 15 hrs to reach the tanker that was towed away from the coast.

We have no cause info. Photos seem to indicate fire was concentrated on starboard side, high.

Ship was within a few months of mandatory scrapping, so we can be confident little money was being spent on maintenance.
