A one mile section of the channel was closed by the Captain of the Port Houston/Galveston Wednesday at 11 p.m. due to an oil spill which occurred when a chemical tanker collided with a moored barge near the San Jacinto Monument.

The tanker Ievoli Splendor, a 544-foot chemical tanker, was docking at the Vopak Terminal in Deer Park, Texas, when it collided with a moored Kirby Marine barge. One of the Ievoli Splendor's fuel tanks was damaged in the collision and began leaking fuel. It is estimated that about 2,000 gallons of fuel were spilled.

The bulk of the oil in ship channel has been recovered and responders continue clean the oil along the shoreline and around the ship and dock. Containment boom has been deployed around the ship and the dock to contain the oil. The Ievoli Splendor is presently moored at Jacinto Port Dock 5.

A photo on a USCG site indicates that a port aft bunker tank was holed just above the waterline. But the picture is not completely clear.

Probable guidance error.
