The pilot's commands were "port 10" and then "midship". Despite those commands, the rudder angle indicator continued to show hard to port. The pilot attempted to correct it by giving commands of "midship" and "hard to starboard", but the rudder remained hard to port because of a mechanical failure. Aware of the danger of striking the Algeirs Point ferry landing, the pilot then gave the command "full astern".
