The vessel SEA VENTURE was down bound on the Delaware River preparing to make a u-turn at the top of the Eddystone Range. After completing the turn the rudder did not respond when the wheel was turned to amidships. The C/E was called to check the steering gear and noticed the rudder against the stops, hard right and the follow up indicator was 5 left rudder. The rudder quadrant gradually moved left to align with the follow up indicator at 5 left. The rudder then had to be placed at 25 left rudder in order to make the vessel steer straight. It seems as if the rudder struck the edge of the channel during her u-turn but actual cause was undetermined.

Not exactly an in-depth investigation, but it does not sound like the rudder really was damaged by contact. Ship was probably in ballast, which gave her more room.
