The loaded 775ft diesel powered T/S, northbound Mississippi River enroute Shell Norco,
suffered a power loss when the ship service generators (SSG) shut down
due to high cooling water temperatures.
No injuries, damage or pollution resulted.
The vessel was immediately anchored on the eastern bank
outside the navigational channel.
Two tugs later assisted the vessel into a nearby-authorized anchorage.
The apparent cause was crew inattentiveness to details.
Both high and low seawater suction valves were opened
when the vessel entered the Mississippi River with a 44 feet draft.
Mud, driftwood and other debris clogged the lower suction strainers,
which caused inadequate cooling water for the SSG.
The high and low suction strainers were opened and cleaned.
