The loaded 665ft diesel powered T/S, northbound Mississippi River from Syria,
suffered a M/E power irregularity when the M/E remote control
at the engine room control console failed.
As a result the M/E failed to respond when ordered ahead from stop.
And as a consequence the stbd
stern of the T/S UNITED TRITON allided with port side shell,
abaft the beam, of the anchored F/S CLIPPER FAITH.
No injuries or pollution resulted.
Both anchors were dropped just prior to the allision
and the chief engineer switched to the emergency local control station,
however the current pushed TRITON onto CLIPPER FAITH'S port side
causing a 3"x2" hole above the waterline (potable water tank), 4" fracture
in side shell plating (engine room) and intermittent paint scraping over the length of the hull.
T/S UNITED TRITON sustained damages to the
STBD side handrails over 12 feet and lifeboat davit,
2.5'x2' and 3'x3' inset IWO the #2 ballast tank.
The apparent causes were a
malfunctioning pneumatic starting system and M/E governor
as well as the fuel oil purifier supply line valve.
The ship's crew renewed the
valve and remote relay from engine room to the wheelhouse.
The governor was repaired by a shore side facility. All SAT.
