2001 build double hulled 27,500 ton M/T Fulgur Newark NJ for Baltimore with 8 million gallons of gasoline, diesel fuel and kerosene, grounded off Tolchester Beach, Eastern Shore, in upper Chesapeake Bay after developing steering problems. Something caused two pumps to oppose each other, effectively locking up steering system, Vessels draws 30 ft and ran aground in 23 ft. At 1130 pm shortly after high tide, two tugs pulled ship back into channel. No damage reported.

On 16 APR at approximately 1740, the M/V FULGUR, #9216925, experienced a loss of steering while transiting south from Pennsauken, NJ to Baltimore, MD through the Tolchester Channel in the Chesapeake Bay resulting in the VSL grounding out side of the starboard side of the channel at position 39-11.3N by 076-16.8W. The M/V FULGUR is a 600.5 foot, 27,539 GRT, double hulled tank vessel owned and operated by Shell International (party ID # 815607) with a flag state of "Isle Of Man" (party Id # 848520). She is propelled by a direct drive diesel engine that delivers 9180 ahead and astern HP. *Full Incident Narrative available in correspondence.
