Nine crew members were reported missing and 13 reported rescued. The bulk carrier had been bound for Japan from Brazil when it reported that it was taking on water at around lat 32.31S, long 26.19W.

One Sep 13, the bulk Aldebaran rescued 13 crew members of bulk Kamikawa Maru, which had sunk in the South Atlantic Ocean 1100 miles ESE of Rio de Janeiro. The rescue operation was done under difficult conditions as the winds were gale force 8 in the area,

Nine out of 23 crew members survived the sinking of the Kamikawa Maru some 1100 miles off Brazil. Structural failure is thought to have been the cause of the loss. Shell plating in way of No 3 hold is believed to have failed.

2001-Sep.-13> Capesize bulker KAMIKAWA Maru, 149000dwt, built in 1986, loaded with iron ore, sinks during bad weather in the South Atlantic Ocean after structural problems. Thirteen crewmembers could be saved by the bulker ALDEBARAN, but 10 crew are missing including the master.
