139,800 dwt OBO buckled in sag while discharging iron ore at Taranto.
Some sources say she only had 30,000 to 40,000 tons still on board.
This is supported by photos which show the ship
failed in sag, but quite high in the water.
The ship nearly broke in two at just about midships.
Some sources blame the failure on bad unloading practice.
One source says the ship had five holds,
and the central hold was still filled.
Even so it is very difficult to generate high stresses
this late in the discharge process.
23 year old ship was owned by the Polemis brothers
whose ships have an extremely poor record.
Almost certain structural condition was a big factor.
Flag was St.Vincent; class was ABS
Crew was very lucky this happened in port.
