The Giovanna began unloading its cargo of 27,000 tons of gasoline
at Beirut abt 1500 Lt on 19981031.
Five minutes late terminal told the ship to stop pumping,
saying they were sending divers to untwist the underwater discharge hose.
Two hours later ship was told to resume.
12 hours later crew on deck sounding the tanks heard an explosion off the
starboard bow some distance from the ship.
Wind blew the flames against the Giovanna's starboard side.
Fire damaged the ship's accommodation and pump room.
