Took water in engine room in lat 17.18S, long 08.54E on 10/4/98. Abandoned by crew. Developed list and drifted. Foundered 160 miles off the coast of Angola in lat 16.58.34S, long 09.06.30E 11/4/98. All 25 crew rescued. Manganese ore loaded.

CHIAN MARINER (LBR) (bulk carrier of 35,224 tons dwt), sprung a leak in the engine room and sent emergency signals at 10.49, when she was on a voyage Takoradi - Jubail with cargo of 27,500 tonnes of manganese ore. She was then in pos. 17 ° 18 'S and 08 ° 54' E. At 16.07 the same day she was abandoned by the crew, who were rescued by the motor vessel ATARAXIA. At 09.20 April 11, however, CHIAN MARINER sunk. The vessel was built in 1974 in Shimizu as Norwegian BIRKNES and was owned at the sinking by the Trinity Mariner SA, Monrovia.
