On 20 June last year, the Apollo Sea left the South African port of Saldanha bound for China with 124,000 tonnes of iron ore. A few hours after leaving the port, the ship broke in two and sank. A radio message alerted the Chinese owners but not South Africa's rescue services.

We know next to nothing about this killer casualty. This is surprising only because the ship had 2470 tons of bunkers on board. The ship sank near Dassen Island near the Cape of Good Hope. The bunker spill came ashore at a penguin colony, and 10,000 birds were oiled. Most sources talk only about this "environmental catastrophe", usually not even mentioning the 36 crewmen killed.
