A Liberian chemical tanker exploded and burst into flames off central Japan today. 23 crew men were report missing. The 23,038 ton Massgusar, carry methanol and other liquids is still burning. The crew consisted of 19 Filipinos and 4 Britons. The ship was bound for Yokohama from Texas when it caught fire about 60 miles off Nojimazaki, south of Tokyo.

On March 14, 1989 during a trip from Houston to Yokohama whilst in a position S of Nojimazaki, a large explosion occurred onboard the tanker which was loaded with methanol and other flammable liquids, and was followed by a large fire onboard, the tanker drifted until March 19 when she broke in two parts and sank.

Photos shows the fire is concentrated aft, just forward of the house. Weather is calm, but we dont know how long after the explosion the pictures were taken. We have no causal info. Ship almost certainly was not inerted.

We are talking a 20,000 ton spill, but methanol is soluable in water. So despite the fact that this is far more toxic to the environment we pretend nothing happened.
