We are fortunate to have this Australian report. The ATSB found that the ship was loaded legally. Witnesses called the condition of the ship at best average but no structure was really inspected. The 2nd Officer and five other survived 29 days in a lifeboat. They reported that the ship had suddenly broken in two between holds 3 and 4 (this was a geared 5 hold ship). The aft section very quickly took on a large port list, and everyone was thrown into the sea. The survivors were able to swim to a lifeboat that had come free. The Australians estimate the weather in the area was 35 to 40 knots. It could not have been much rougher than this or the survivors would not have been able to swim to and climb into a lifeboat.
