On July 15, 1987, while laid up at the S. Korean port of Yosu, the 116,508 dwt American steam tanker was driven aground on rocks south of Yosu in lat 34.41.4N, long 127.47.36E during typhoon Thelma. Extensive damage was sustained to her shell plating, rudder and propeller, with some tanks and the engine and boiler rooms being flooded. After being refloated on January 27, the Manhatten was declared a CTL and sold to Chinese shipbreakers.

This is the old Esso Manhatten that was converted to an ice-breaking tanker. She was a hell of a tanker, twin screw, strongly built. One source says "driven ashore by typhoon Thelma at Yosu". Probably an anchor dragging in ballast, but we have no real info.
