Cathay Seatrade had sailed Brom buchanan, Liberia on January 6, 1987 for Emden loaded with 59,000 tons of iron ore. She reported her noon position on january 12 to be lat 28.70N, long 5.7W with her ETA Emben being January 19th. The following day the master advised by radio that he was reverting regarding his ETA due to having encounted gale force winds. No further news was ever heard fom the vessel.

The Cathay Seatrade with a H and M value of USD 5m was presumed to have sunk with all 27 of her Taiwanese crew due to the extremely heavy weather that struck the Canary Islands area that day.
