The 131,813 dwt Liberian motor tanker Matterhorn was on the Gulf shuttle run from Kharg Is. to Larak Is., fully loaded with Iranian crude oil, when she was struck by an Iraqi Exocet missile on the starboard side abreast of the engine room area while south of Kharg Island in lat 28.25N, long 50.58E at 10.18 am on January 4, 1987. The exploding missile blew a hole in the side shell plating some 10 m by 4 m, with the deck forward of the bridge house torn and forced upward by 5 m. An immediate fire also resulted which immobilized the vessel. However there were npo casualties.

Towed to Larak Island, discharged, and scrapped.

Sounds like a secondary explosion. Hard to believe there were no casualties.
