The 259,617 dwt Liberian tanker Mistra was moored
off Kharg Island in ballast on August 7, 1986,
when she was struck by an Iraqi warplane's Exocet missile.
With the exploding warhead causing an immediate fire,
the crew abandoned the blazing vessel without loss.
The fire was not extinguished by salvage vessels until three days later
after which the tanker was taken in tow for Larak Island.
However, while en route, she was struck by another Exocet missile
on August 20 south of Kharg Island in lat 28.30N, long 50.40E,
resulting in a further serious oputbreak of fire.
