The Medusa was proceeding southwards down the Gulf
from Kharg to Sirri, fully loaded,
when she was set ablaze by the missile strike
about 40 miles South of Kharg on June 10, 1986.
The fire rage out of control in her engine room
and aft accommodation and, when her engine room flooded,
the main boiler exploded.
She was abandoned without loss by her 30 man crew
but with leaking oil pouring from her ruptured No 9 starboard tank,
the sea around the vessel was turned into a raging inferno.
