At 9 am on May 31, 1986, while on a ballast Gulf shuttle passage from Sirri Island to Kharg Island, the 319,226 dwt Liberian steam tanker Hellespont Enterprise was struck by an Exocet missile that had been fired by an Iraqi warplane when the vessel was about 50 miles from Kharg Island. The missle entered the engine room, which immediately caught fire. Abandoned by her crew without loss, the blazing tanker was taken in tow for Sirri Island, while tugs fought the fire, but a major explosion occurred on June 5, ripping two holes in her hull plating. One measured 10 m by 5 m while the other was 4m by 4m. CTL.
