While en route from Ponta da Madeira, Brazil to Dunkirk, loaded with 109,000 tons of iron ore, violent explosions occurred in the No 3 hold of the 116,450 dwt Panamanian ore/bulk/ore vessel Alexandros F when SW of the Cape Verde Islands in lat 11.46N, long 31.25W on May 7, 1986. All 27 crewmen safely abandoned ship the following day, being rescued from their liferafts by the motor bulk carrier Eastwind. The Alexandros F sank one hour after being abandoned. The value of her hull and machinery was put at USD25m.

Lot of similarities to Berge Istra/Vanga, except crew survived. Iron ore does not explode. Best guess is cgo leak into ballast tank, but we need confirmation.
