The Greek motor bulk carrier Karin Vatis
was on a voyage from Liverpool to Kandla,
carrying a cargo of 31,620 tons of scrap steel,
when she sank in the Red Sea south of Safaga
in lat 25.13N, long 35.44E on November 16, 1985,
folowing an ingress of water
into her double bottom tanks and engine room.
The 27 crew members of the vessel,
which had exited the Suez Canal two days previously,
were rescued from lifeboats by Egyptian naval craft.
