Just three days after the devastating attack on M. Vatan,
the 226,145 dwt Turkish Steam tanker M. Ceyhan
was herself struck by an Iraqi warplane's Exocet missile
about 120 miles south of Kharg Island
in lat 27.46N, long 51.11E at about 6.15 am on July 12,1985,
fully load with 200,000 tonnes of Iranian crude oil.
There were no casualties. the 38 man crew taking to lifeboats
after the missel had slammed into a bunker tank
and started a fierce fire in the engine room, bridge and accommodation,
that led to dense black smoke pouring from her.
When the fire had been extinguished by salavage tugs,
the badly damaged M. Ceyhan was towed to Sirri Island
to discharge her cargo.
