Having loaded a cargo of 230,000 tonnes of Iranian crude
at Kharg Island, the Norwegian steam tanker Thorshavet
was proceeding southward down the Gulf
when she was attacked by an Iraqi warplane
south of Kharg Is in lat 28.06N, long 50.51E
at about 1230 pm on Decmber 21, 1984.
The Exocet missile slammed into her No 5 starboard tank
below the deck but above the waterline,
causing an immediate explosion and fire.
24 of her 26 man (see below) Norwegian and Spanish crew
were lifted off by helicopter to Kharg Is,
while the master CaptainEgil Endresen and his Chief Engineer
remained on board to attempt to fight the blaze.
Still on fire the vessel was towed to Dubai
where her cargo was offloaded.
