Having loaded a cargo of 230,000 tonnes of Iranian crude at Kharg Island, the Norwegian steam tanker Thorshavet was proceeding southward down the Gulf when she was attacked by an Iraqi warplane south of Kharg Is in lat 28.06N, long 50.51E at about 1230 pm on Decmber 21, 1984. The Exocet missile slammed into her No 5 starboard tank below the deck but above the waterline, causing an immediate explosion and fire. 24 of her 26 man (see below) Norwegian and Spanish crew were lifted off by helicopter to Kharg Is, while the master CaptainEgil Endresen and his Chief Engineer remained on board to attempt to fight the blaze. Still on fire the vessel was towed to Dubai where her cargo was offloaded. Scrapped.

djw1 inspected this ship in Singapore shortly before this voyage. He was astounded to discover that the Norwegian catering staff included two young Norwegian females which they were taking into harms way. The Norwegian officers regarded this as normal.
