The Cyprus motor tanker Amethyst, which had loaded crude oil at Kharg, was attacked by an Iraqi warplane when only six hours sailing south of Kharg Is in lat 28.02N, long 50.30E at about 6:35 am on August 24 1978. The missile struck No 6 starboard tank, causing an immediate explosion and fire in both Nos. 6 and 7 tanks and the accommodationa and engine room that resulted in the death on one Filipino crew memebr. Blazing oil begain pouring into the sea from the ruptured tank as tugs arrived on the scene to pick up the surviving 33 crew.

Ship was only 31,280 grt, so 6 and 7 (slops?) were undoubtedly the afmost cargo tanks. She was towed to Lavan Island, where the remaining cargo was transferred, and then towed to the breakers.
