On July 30, 1984 at 1236 the UK tank vessel Alvenus grounded in the Calcasieu River Bar Channel 11 mile SE of Cameron LA. The vessel suffered a structural failure which ruptured the hull near the No 2 tanks. The resulting spill of approx 65,600 bbls of Ven Merey and Pilon crude was carried in a westerly direction by wind and currents. Offshore recovery was hampered by rough weather and the magnitude of the spill. The water temp was 80F and winds were from the E and NE 15-20 knots.

Shortly after noon on July 30, 1984, the British tanker Alvenus hit the soft bottom of a channel 11 miles off the Louisiana coast and buckled hard enough to crack open its main deck, spilling 2.8 million gallons of Venezuelan crude oil into the Gulf of Mexico. The giant petroleum puddle streamed westward with the Gulf current, across an invisible border into Texas, where it came ashore on the Galveston beach four days later and 70 miles from its mothership. Oil washed ashore in Galveston for two weeks.

Overly dark picture of the damage. This site also shows two supply boats holding a boom in the spill. The boom is clearly doing nothing, despite relatively calm conditions.

In terms of volume, this is the second worst grounding in US waters, Ship ran aground well offshore in narrow but well-marked channel into Lake Charles. We have no info on cause. Oil came ashore as far west as Houston.

The ship must have been traveling at a fair speed, for the whole hull buckled just aft of the aft end of the focsle bulwark. Big crack extends all the way up to maindeck. Double hull would not have helped in this one.
