While lying at Kharg Island's NW jetty on June 24, 1984,
fully loaded with a caro og 300,000 tons of crude oil,
'the 325,645 dwt Greek stem tanker Alexander the Great
was strucj by an Exocet missile
fired by an Iraqi warplane at 5:40 AM, local time.
No 5 port wing tank immediatelyu caught fire,
but none of her 25 man crew were injured.
Several thousand tons of oil were reported
to have been lost due to the 3m holes in her side.
