The Panamanian motor tanker Esperanza II was bound Kharg Island in ballast to load a crude oil cargo when on May 13, 1984, she was struck by an Exocet missile fired by an Iraqi airplane, south of Kharg Iland. Immediately set on fire, the blazing vessel was abandoned by her crew, none of whom was injured. Her engien room and accommodation had been gutted in the inferno.

LMIU did not give ship name. Tabriz was hit the same day, but Navios says suffered only minor damage.

Not surprising the radar deflectors did little. Difficult to generate a radar target bigger than a big tanker in ballast.
