The Panamanian motor tanker Esperanza II
was bound Kharg Island in ballast
to load a crude oil cargo
when on May 13, 1984,
she was struck by an Exocet missile
fired by an Iraqi airplane, south of Kharg Iland.
Immediately set on fire, the blazing vessel
was abandoned by her crew,
none of whom was injured.
Her engien room and accommodation had been gutted in the inferno.
