Shortly after having sailed from Umm Said, Qatar on Decmber 9m 1983,
for Aden, loaded with 46,294 long tons of crude oil,
a fire broke out in the engine room of the Greek ore/bulk/oil motor vessel
when about 200 miles off Doha Qatar in lat 25.34N; long 52.03E later the same day.
The crew abandoned the blazing vessel after explosions ripped through her.
All 32 were safely picked up.
The Pericles G.C. blazing fiercely drifted in the Gulf
until capsizing in lat 25.30N long 52.04E,
during the night of December 12-13,
resting upside down on the seabed with 30 ft of her hull
visible above water.
Declared a constructive total loss, she was insured for $10 million.
