While on a voyage from Mobile to Mizushima, loaded with 54,335 tons of coal, the Panamanian motor bulk carrier Academy Star developed cracks in her hull below the waterline when about 170 miles east of Hachijo Island in lat 33.15N,long 143.40E, on March 19,1982. With all six of her holds flooded, the 31 man crew was safely taken off. The drifting vessel was then taken in tow by a Japanese patrol vessel, but she ran aground on a rocky bottom near Nojima Saki Lighthouse due to rough seas. The wrecked vessel subsequently broke in two.
