On December 16. 1981. while the Liberian motor tanker
Oriental Navigator was lying in empty condition at Limay, Manila Bay
having just completed discharge of her cargo of Indonesian crude oil,
a fire on board the Phillipine tug Malabayabas,
which was moored alongside, caused an explosion and major fire
in the aft quarter of the tanker.
As a result 19 of her 35 man crew died,
plus 4 of the tug's five crew,
while her after structure, and accommodation were gutted.
