While on a voyage from Escravos to Philadelphia,
loaded with 113,239 lt of crude oil,
the Greek motor tanker George S
was abandoned by 24 of her crew due to a fire
in her accommodation when about 500 mi NW of St Vincent, CV
in lat 21.56N, 31.53W onApril 24, 1981.
The master and 5 other crew men decided to return on board
to fight the blaze on their vessel,
which drifted for 13 days until being taken in tow on May 7.
She eventually reached Philadelphia on June 6
to discharge safely her cargo.
CTL, towed to Valencia, and scrapped.
