While on a ballast voyage from Philadephia to Aruba,
the Greek motor tanker was abandoned by her 36 man crew,
due to a fire in her engine room about 80 miles NNE of Cape Henry,
in lat 37.55N, long 74.32W on February 1, 1981.
The vessel was later anchored 19 miles off Chincoteague Virginia,
but the fire spread, burning for two weeks,
severely gutting the superstucture and engine room.
When this had been extinguished,
the Aikaterini was towed into Baltimore on February 27.
She was then declared a constructive total loss
and sold for further trading.
