The Italian motor bulk carrier Sandalion
was on a voyage fro Baltimore to Hirohata
carrying a cargo of coal,
when she was abandoned by her crew about 690 mi east
of Nojima Saki in lat 29.30N, long 162.23E on November 29, 1980,
after taking in water in holds 1 and 2 in very bad weather.
All 30 men were safely picked up by the Chilean bulk carrier Arauco,
which the proceeded to Los Angeles.
The Sandalion was presumed to have sunk shortly afterwards.
