The Greek steam tanker Asphalt Merchant was inward bound to Tripoli from Pireaus in a loaded condition, when she ran aground off Tripoli on April 8, 1980. After being refloated six days later, she discharged her cargo then proceeded to Tampa for drydocking. Only temporary repairs were effected, however, and she then resumed trading but when returning to Tampa in December a further examination in dry dock revealed that extensive bottom damage had been sustained. She was declared a CTL.

Scrapped in Brownsville. CTX would love to see the Class survey report that allowed this ship to resume trading with CTL bottom damage.
