While on a ballast passage from Amagasaki to Vancouver,
the 55,241 dwt South Korean bulk carrier, Hongjin,
was abandoned by her 28 man crew in the North Pacific
in lat 40.45N, long 155.00W on December 24, 1979,
after sustaining a hull fracture in very heavy weather.
They were all safely picked up
by the Japanese container vessel Yashima Maru.
She was presumed to have sunk.
