The Greek motor bulk carrier Mitsos was on a voyage from New York to Thessaloniki, loaded with a cargo of 18,092 tonnes of scrap metal, when she sank about 850 mi west of the Azores in lat 36.08N, long 44.24W on February 1, 1979 after being abandoned by her crew in gale force weather. All 27 crew members were safely picked up by the motor vessel Jamaica Producer.
