Ships was loaded, some say cargo was lightered at False Bay. Both False bay and St Helena Bay are quite a distance from Cape recife.

The picture at www.uctshiplaw.com shows the split following the outline of the forepeak tank almost exactly, almost as if it were cut with a torch. The demarkation between the corroded segregated forepeak ballast tank and the much less corroded focsle and cargo tanks is very clear. Yet some sources claimed the cause was the proverbial "freak wave".
