All 69 persons on board lost their lives
when the Indian motor bulk carrier Chandragupta sank
after being abandoned in atrocious weather conditions
about 1000 mi NW Honolulu in lat 37.00N, long 165.20W
on January 5, 1978.
The 69 on the vessel which had sailed from Portland Oregon
on December 28, 1977, bound for Iran,
loaded with a cargo of 38,000 tons of wheat,
comprised 63 crew members, four wives, and two children.
They took to lifeboats and rafts after the vessel began to sink
during a violent storm that created 50 ft waves.
Only debris, lifejackets, and overturned lifeboats were found.
