The Panamaian motor tanker Caribbean Sea was on a voyage from Bajo Grande to Tacoma loaded with 28,000 tons of Venezuelan crude oil, when she sank south of El Salvador in lat 11.34N, long 89.51W on May 27, 1977, after her engine room rapidly flooded. Her 35 officers and crew were all safely rescued by the Norwegian motor vessel Star Taro.

This is either a hull failure or a machinery failure. Hull failures are unlikely to start in the Engine Room, so guessing machinery failure. Need more info.
