All 38 men on board the Panamanian steam tanker Grand Zenith were lost when the vessel disappeared in the North Atlantic at the end of December, 1976. The Grand Zenith had sailed from Teesport on December 19, 1976 bound for Fall River Mass, with a full cargo of 28,539 long tons of No 6 Fuel oil. Her last noon position was lat 41.18N, long 58.48W on December 29th. However on December 30, the vessel's managers received a cable and high seas telephone call from the master both of which reported that the Grand Zenith had encountered very bad weather and gale force winds when about 30 miles SE of Cape Sable at 5:30m PM, forcing her to slow down, with her scheduled arrival time now being put back to 10 AM on January 2, 1977.
