The 33 year old Panamanian turbo-electric bulk carrier
Sylvia L Ossa with 37 crew members,
sailed from Rio de Janeiro on September 25, 1976
bound for Philadelphia loaded with a cargo of iron ore.
She last reported her position at 8 pm on October 12,
when she advised she was forced to reduce speed
because of a severe gale,
and was heaving to in lat 32.00N, long 68.15W.
A USCG aircraft subsequently located
an overturned lifeboat and an oil slick
about 160 miles due west of Bermuda,
but a further extrensive search
which sighted considerable wreckage
failed to find any trace of her crew.
