While sailing from Coatzacoalcos in a loaded condition
on February 18, 1976, bound for Haifa,
the Greek steam tanker Scorpio struck bottom,
developing steering gear trouble that caused her to run aground.
During refloating operations, she sustained serious machinery damage
and anchored 11 miles off port for an inspection.
Due to the extent of the damage she was declared
a constructive total loss and sold to shipbreakers
in Brownsville Texas for demolition.
